This course focuses on empirical research within the domain of corporate finance, with a primary goal of selecting innovative research topics within corporate finance that have the potential for publication in top finance journals. It serves as a catalyst for unlocking students’ research potential, helping them establish the right research direction, and, as a result, fostering high-quality research. Therefore, special emphasis of this course is placed on encouraging students to deeply understand relevant literature, critically assess existing works, enhance their research skills, and formulate innovative research plans. By examining how the research has developed in various areas in corporate finance, students can learn how to identify research questions. More importantly, students learn how to decide which research questions merit further consideration and which ones should be dropped.

1. Selecting subject areas for class discussion
Corporate finance encompasses a wide spectrum of areas, making it impractical to deeply explore each one. The course will present a list of corporate finance papers recently published in top-tier finance journals. These papers will be categorized into several subject areas, including investment decisions, financing decisions, payout policy, corporate governance, corporate sustainable development, compensation policy, and interdisciplinary research. Several influential papers from each subject area will be chosen for class discussions, covering research motivation, academic contributions, theories and hypotheses, sample design, research methodology, and research findings. These papers illustrate how the research process works. Students are expected to read the papers very carefully, actively participate in discussions, exchange ideas, comment upon and criticize the papers, and suggest potential future directions and topics.
2. Submitting and presenting research proposal
In the final weeks of the course, students will present research proposals related to corporate finance. The proposal should include the motivation behind selecting the research topic, the degree of innovation compared to existing literature, a review of existing literature, hypothesis development, and research design. The emphasis in the proposal should be on the student’s own original ideas. The proposal should be as definite as possible. After the research proposal presentation, the instructor and students will engage in discussions, provide comments, and offer suggestions. Through this interactive process, it will become apparent whether the research proposal holds potential for further development. For research topics deemed innovative and high-potential, guidance will be offered to shape a research plan capable of being published in top-tier finance journals.

陳聖賢講座教授現為國立臺灣大學財務金融學系專任講座教授。研究專長為公司理財、公司治理、投資學。陳教授曾任國立政治大學財務管理學系校聘講座教授及校友講座教授、國立臺灣大學財務金融學系終身特聘教授及系主任、元智大學財務金融學系教授及系主任兼所長、新加坡南洋理工大學財務金融系講師（英制）、美國Rutgers University財務金融系客座助理教授。陳教授曾獲第二十八屆教育部國家講座、第六十二屆教育部學術獎、三度國科會傑出研究獎、2021年科技部傑出特約研究員獎。現任中央銀行第二十七屆監事、臺灣財務金融學會第十五屆常務理事。陳聖賢教授教學經驗豐富且表現卓越，曾三度獲頒國立臺灣大學教學績優教師、三度榮獲國立政治大學商學院教學優良教師、以及兩度獲得新加坡南洋理工大學Teacher of the Specialization (Financial Analysis) Award。
